it. Lydia is homesick but running from herself. Emme is dealing with a
past she's tired of hearing about. Arden's thick head and thin skin
won't let him listen to the people he needs to.

It is 2008 and Arden can only think about 2003. Arden is thinking of his friend Emme in 2003, and not really thinking about his girlfriend Lydia in 2008. Lydia won't tell anyone what she is thinking about. In 2003, Emme is straining against being "above it all." In 2008, Emme is looking out into the distance and she is seeing that it has no end.
